Biographical History

Hezekiah Brewer Hall (d. 1895) and Corintha Yale Hall (d. 1940) were residents of Norwood, New York in St. Lawrence County. Hezekiah was a farmer and surveyor, described in his obituary as "a man of iron will and strong convictions, and fearless in the advocacy of the same." Corintha, sometimes spelled Corinthia or Corrinthia, was his fourth wife, Hezekiah having been married previously to Jane Armstrong, to a Mrs. Wheeler, and to a Mrs. Kellogg. (Courier and Freeman, 20 Nov 1895)

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Hezekiah B. Hall and Corintha Hall Diaries consist of two volumes and a number of loose pages, spanning the years 1870-1923 (with gaps). Hezekiah Hall wrote the entire volume for 1875-1881, while Corintha (sometimes spelled Corinthia) Hall wrote most of 1894 and everything after 1895, when her husband died. Subjects include the weather, work done around the farm, family matters, social events, and more. One page from 1870 reads, in part:

May 8th Received a receipt from Executor of Grandpa Post's estate, $1300 00.
9th Commenced plowing corn ground.
10th Sophronia came, spent the forenoon. After dinner went to Moses. Showed her where the lightning struck a tree in Dr Dreper's lot yesterday.
11th Plowing. G holds plow. How much older it seems to make him. Uncle Tyler called, said he was going to Boston next day, pehaps should bring money back to pay in for William's farm.
