Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Gumbes Family Correspondence contains approximately 40 items. The collection begins with a letter of introduction dated 24 Aug 1786 written for Benjamin Gumbes. Most of the following letters were written by Rebecca Gumbes and are addressed to her son, Samuel Wetherill Gumbes (1813-1865), or his wife, Frances Sarah Dring Macomb (d. 1896). Rebecca's letters span 1832-1869, bulk 1832-1849.
