Scope and Contents of the Collection

The George Bird Grinnell Papers consists entirely of small pieces of paper on which are written authorizations for payment to the Cheyenne tribe of Lame Deer, Montana. Documentation from the U.S. Department of the Interior, which accompanies the collection, indicates that the payments were authorized by George Bird Grinnell on behalf of an Englishman, George Walters, who had established a trading post at Lame Deer. The payments were for both goods (relics, handicrafts) and services (translation, guides).
