Section 11609 Laboratory Equipment

image 1: Laboratory Equipment.

The image shows the installation of the frame for lab tops and associated service fittings which will control the supply of air, water (DI & DS), gas, vacuums, and power. The coordination with other divisions (mechanical and electrical) as well as other trades is imperative to assure the proper installation of this equipment. The frame provides for a mechanical chase which is accessible and allows for equipment changes in the future.

A completed installation of lab tops, metal casework, shelves, and a fume hood can be seen in image 2. The fume hood is connected to exhaust ductwork which directly vents through the roof. The special nature of the laboratory requires that the hood be in a constant fresh air exhaust mode while lab work is in progress. The type of experiments and science being practiced in each lab also requires special non-corrosive stainless steel ducts.

Image 3 shows the various service fittings for gas, air, water and vacuum as well as controls for fume hood operations. The constant exhaust condition of a fume hood requires that 100% fresh air be supplied to the laboratory as well as emergency power circuits for electricity.
