Web Subject Directories
Here are some great subject directories which organize Web materials by subject or type, and often allow searching. Searchers seeking high quality material for academic use may get better results with the first three sites on this list.
- Librarians' Index to the Internet
A searchable, annotated subject directory of nearly 4,000 Internet resources selected and evaluated by a team of 68 Librarians.
- Digital Librarian: a librarian's choice of the best of the web
Subject directory with occasional annotations. Newly added sites can be perused separately, as well as within their subject categories.
- Argus Clearinghouse
Searchable or browseable by subject. Includes ratings on five different criteria. Resources are selected and reviewed by staff of professional Librarians.
- Open Directory Project
The largest human-edited directory on the web.
- WWW Virtual Library
One of the most respected directories of the web, started by Tim Berners-Lee.
- Yahoo
Massive site with a detailed hierarchy. One of the earliest and best subject directories for the Web. Geared for the general public. Searchable; occasional brief annotations.
- About.com (formerly The Mining Co.)
Consumer-oriented meta-site which organizes web resources by topic. Mining Company openly solicits new "guides" (contributors). Viewers can apply for available topics - follow steps onscreen.
- Webliography: A Guide to Internet Resources
Geared toward college level use. Occasional brief annotations. Not searchable.
