GIS is the combination of computer hardware and software with the ability to coordinate and manipulate layers of spacial and attribute data to produce a map relevant to the users' or creators' needs.

The E.S. Bird Library houses a six workstation GIS lab on the third floor. The lab has an ESRI site license for ArcInfo, ArcView and other ESRI titles as well as other GIS application software programs and tools. The workstations also have a variety of word processing, spread-sheet, database, and graphics programs.
