SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
ISDP ILLUSTRATION & AD DESIGN
LIBRARY RESOURCES

Introduction:

Welcome to Syracuse University Library. We are here to support your research needs during your tenure as students enrolled in the ISDP programs of Illustration and Advertising Design. Since the majority of your work is done away from the Syracuse University Campus, this guide emphasizes online resources such as databases and materials request forms.

During the time that you are away from campus do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about library resources and/or your individual research needs. Full contact information is provided at the end of this guide.

Online Resources:

This page will be your gateway to online library resources (e.g. catalogs and databases) and requests for materials to be sent to you. BOOKMARK THIS PAGE!

There are several online tours of library facilities that will help you while you are in residency.

How to locate books:

You can locate books and other materials (e.g. videos, DVDs, musical recordings, periodicals, etc.) owned by Syracuse University Library by using our online catalog SUMMIT. In order to use the full capabilities of SUMMIT and related databases when you are away from the SU campus, you will need to login for Remote Access to Databases using EZproxy. Instructions for this process are available at
http://library.syr.edu/lis/proxy/

Go to the Basic Search page for SUMMIT

SUMMIT may be searched by author, title, subject or several keyword methods. There is also an Advanced Search page that allows searching of a combination of terms. Both the Basic and Advance searches also allow the use of Limits such as date, language, or medium to narrow the search.

Borrowing books while on the SU Campus:

The loan period for ISDP students is 28 weeks, although some exceptions may apply depending on the type of library material. Please bring your SU I.D. card to the Circulation Desk, along with the materials you wish to check out. In order to receive the 28 week loan period, you must inform the circulation assistant that you are an ISDP student. Be sure to double-check the due date before leaving the circulation desk. You are responsible for all books charged out to you until they have been received at the library and discharged.

Obtaining books from SU Library: (when you are not on campus)

Books that are owned by SU Library and are available for circulation may be requested from the library. To request a book or books use the ISDP book request form available at http://library.syr.edu/information/forms/isdpbks.html

Books from other Libraries

SUMMIT will not tell you what materials are located at other libraries in the United States that might be close to your geographic base of operations. To determine holdings of these libraries you can either search the online catalogs of those libraries (e.g. New York Public Library http://www.nypl.org/) or check one of the two Union Catalogs that are among S.U. Library's databases. These catalogs list the holdings of academic and public libraries in the United States. The two Union Catalogs available for you to check are:

WorldCat

Description: Over 36 million records of materials cataloged by OCLC member libraries. Includes manuscripts written as early as the 11th century. Updated daily.

Access WorldCAT

RLIN

Description: The RLG Union Catalog (RLIN) is a comprehensive database which serves as a major union catalog for everything from books and serials to archives, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, photographs, posters, computer files, and more. The Catalog extends from the advent of printing to the present, reflecting the collections of major research and academic libraries; archives and museums; law, medical, and theological libraries; art and music libraries; area studies collections; public and corporate libraries; historical societies and book clubs. Records include the names of contributing libraries as well as local call numbers. Access Note: Two simultaneous users only. Please use the exit button when research is complete.

Obtaining Books from Libraries other than SU:

SU Library does not currently provide books from other libraries to students in the ISDP program. It is suggested that you try to get such items from one of your local public or academic libraries.

How to locate and obtain SU Master's theses:

ISDP students at the stage of researching and writing a thesis often like to borrow previous theses as models and topical references. All those theses from the Master of Arts in Advertising Design or Illustration program that have been sent to the library by the Department of Visual Communications are available for loan. They will be listed on SUMMIT by author or title. To obtain these fill out the ISDP book request form: http://library.syr.edu/information/forms/isdpbks.html. Your departmental advisor will often recommend particular theses for you to examine.

How to locate and obtain periodical articles:

Thesis research will entail finding periodical articles related to your topic. In order to help you locate such articles, the library subscribes to a number of searchable databases. These databases are located on the library's Databases web page.

The databases on this main page are accessible alphabetically by title or grouped together by subject. Under the broad category of Arts & Humanities you will find the sub-heading of Art & Design. The databases listed here will be a good place to start your search for articles. From this group, I would recommend the following as particularly useful:

Art Abstracts

This database covers the visual arts from prehistoric times to the present and in all regions of the world. Articles and reviews published between 1984 and the present are indexed. Abstracts of the entries are included from 1994 on. Based on the contents of Art Index.

Access Art Abstracts

Art Index Retrospective

The first half of Art Index from 1929 to 1984 covering world art from prehistoric times through the 1980s.

Entries date back as far as the late 1960s. Includes information on modern and contemporary arts dating from the late 19th century onwards, and including photography since its invention. Contains abstracts of English and foreign-language material on famous and lesser-known artists, movements, and trends. Interlibrary Loan:

To request copies of periodical articles you need to be registered with SUL's Interlibrary Loan system known as ILLIAD. You can access ILLIAD through its home page: https://illiad.syr.edu/. After you have registered you can then logon and fill-out requests for the articles that you need.

The Library will mail photocopies of journal articles to you, whether they are from the SU collection or obtained through Interlibrary Loan. To request articles, students should use ILLIAD, the Libray's Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Service.

If you are requesting an article that the Library does own, when submitting your article request through ILLIAD, please be sure to indicate in the notes field: "ISDP - SU owns journal".

Online Art Dictionary:

Grove Dictionary of Art

Full text of The Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols.) with constant additions of new material and updates to the text, plus extensive image links and all the sophisticated search advantages possible with an online reference source. Also includes the Bridgeman Art Library of digital images.

Library Services to ISDP Students:

At Syracuse University Library we recognize that ISDP students may need to access Library services in a different manner than traditional on-campus students. The information on this web page outlines the policies and services we provide specifically for students enrolled in ISDP programs. Along with other SU Library users, ISDP students are expected to comply with Syracuse University Library policies unless otherwise stated here. Paper copies of the Library's policies for ISDP students are available from E.S. Bird Library, and the Science and Technology Library.
