Combined Health Information Database

CHID is a bibliographic database produced by health-related agencies of the Federal Government. This database provides titles, abstracts, and availability information for health information and health education resources. Some items are not indexed elsewhere.

Internet Resources to Teach about Aging
Compiled by Martha Bonney at SU's Center For Policy Research, this includes a list of films and videos about aging, a guide to listservs, an explanation of sources commonly found on the web, and annotated lists of links in various aging-related categories.

AoA Grantee Project Reports
This bibliographic database contains references to program- and policy-related materials on aging not referenced in any other computer system or print resource. It describes materials produced by Administration on Aging grantees funded under Title IV of the Older Americans Act of 1965. The Act supports demonstrations, research, and training projects, and a number of institutes and centers, such as the National Resource Centers on Native American Elders, Long-Term Care, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and Elder Abuse, as well as the National Eldercare Institutes. An email address is provided for obtaining copies of the text of the documents.

US Dept of Health and Human Services
According to their website "The Department of Health and Human Services is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves." It includes more than 300 programs. Their website includes an extensive section on aging, which links to agency for healthcare research and quality, CDC, NIH, NLM, AOA, Medline, etc. It is the umbrella organization for the following agencies and programs:


Administration on Aging
Established in 1965 by the Older Americans Act, Administration on Aging provides news updates, factsheet, monthly articles ("Spotlight of the Month"), reports, announcements, Internet & email resources, and more.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): Elderly Healthcare
AHRQ's mission is to support research designed to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans. The website includes links to press releases and research findings back to January 2000.

Health Resource and Services Administration

HRSA works to improve and extend life for people living with HIV/AIDS, provide primary health care to medically underserved people, serve women and children through State programs, and train a health workforce that is both diverse and motivated to work in underserved communities

Medicare
Medicare is part of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Includes Nursing Home Compare, which rates nursing homes for quality. Also includes information comparing medicare plans, medigap, and prescription drug assistance programs.

National Institute on Aging
Programs, publications, press releases, budget updates, employment and training info, links to related sites.


New York State Office for the Aging
Toll-free hotlines, local offices, public forums, Eldercare Locator service (nationwide), articles from Aging News Newsletter, facts & figures, legislation news, etc.

New York Statewide Resource Center for Geriatric Education
Supports geriatric education for medicine, nursing, and the allied health professions. In addition to curricula, fellowship information, and other educational opportunities, this site reports on legislative and state agency activities and initiatives affecting geriatrics and gerontology.

Social Security Administration
This website, mostly geared for consumers, includes an easy to read synopsis about the future of Social Security and a history of the organization.

AARP (American Association of Retired Persons)
Full text interviews from the AARP Bulletin, special features from Modern Maturity, consumer factsheets, etc.

AARP International Affairs
Highlights of the site include a monthly column called "New Perspectives," international news, and links to international conferences, periodicals, and seniors organizations, among others.

Alzheimers Association

Alzheimers Association's mission is "to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health."  The website includes a section for professionals and researchers.

American Society on Aging
News of the day; feature articles on wide variety of subjects pertaining to aging. ASA is a nonprofit organization.

Generations United

Generations United describes itself as "the catalyst that brings single-age focused groups together to build and support a common agenda while providing a unique voice in public debate."  The website includes full text of Generations United magazine, Together; various fact sheets, reports and guides , bibliographies, and information about GU's programs, public policies and online chat and message forum. 

Gerontological Society of America
Information on grants, fellowships, legislation, and policy updates. Links to other organizations, interest groups.

National Alliance for Caregiving

The National Alliance for Caregiving says it "is dedicated to providing support to family caregivers and the professionals who help them and to increasing public awareness of issues facing family caregivers."  It includes brochures, reports, information about international caregiving legislation and more.

Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving

"Through research, education, and training, the RCI promotes the mental health and well-being of individuals, families, and professional caregivers; promulgates effective caregiving practices; builds public awareness of caregiving needs; and advances public and social policies that enhance caring communities."  The website includes brochures, reports, news, and information about the Institute's programs.

Urban Institute: Publications on Retirees/Seniors
"The Urban Institute is a nonprofit nonpartisan policy research and educational organization established to examine the social, economic, and governance problems facing the nation. It provides information and analysis to public and private decision makers to help them address these challenges and strives to raise citizen understanding of the issues and tradeoffs in policy making." Text of the reports is available on the website.

Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology

"The Institute of Gerontology dedicates research in the social and behavioral sciences and cognitive neuroscience to issues of aging and urban health." The website includes descriptions of current and past research on lifespan cognitive neuroscience, health disparities, and disability.

AgingStats.gov- Key Indicators of Well Being 2006


Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics
Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics, which was established in 1986 with the goal of bringing together Federal agencies that share a common interest in improving aging-related data, collects this data for the Older Americans 2004: Key Indicators of Well-Being report about population, economics, health status, health risks and behaviors, and health care. The 2000 report and links to other federal data sources are also available.

Health and Retirement Survey
The "Health and Retirement Study (HRS) surveys more than 22,000 Americans over the age of 50 every two years. Supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA U01AG09740), the study paints an emerging portrait of an aging America's physical and mental health, insurance coverage, financial status, family support systems, labor market status, and retirement planning.HRS data products are available without cost to researchers and analysts. User Registration is required in order to download files."

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Statistics and Data
"Broad range of quantitative information on Medicare's programs, from estimates of future Medicare and Medicaid spending to enrollment, spending, and claims data. CMS also offers a broad range of consumer research to help its partners and staff."

National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging
"The National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA), located within ICPSR, is funded by the National Institute on Aging. NACDA acquires and preserves data relevant to gerontological research, processing as needed to promote effective research use, disseminates them to researchers, and facilitates their use." Some data is available online and some is available via ICPSR in Bird Library Media Services.

National Center for Health Statistics- Aging Activities- Trends in Health and Aging
Aging Activities is at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Aging Activities' mission is to perform research and analysis and to disseminate data on the health and health care utilization of aging Americans. The website includes "Data Warehouse on Trends in Health and Aging," a collection of data tables providing information on trends of health and health care use by older Americans (viewable online), and "Longitudinal Studies of Aging," a family of surveys designed to measure changes in health status, health-related behaviors, health care utilization, and the causes and consequences of these changes within and across two cohorts of elderly Americans (data is not online but CD-ROM's of the data are available in Bird Library's Maps and Government Information Department).

Syracuse University
All-University Gerontology Center (Syracuse University)
Established in 1972, the SU Gerontology Center is one of the oldest institutions of its kind. Its mission is to "encourage and facilitate professional education and research to benefit older people."
