Information Collected Automatically
Syracuse University Library information systems gather and store certain information automatically when users browse the Web site, read pages, or download information. We use this information to track site usage, monitor site performance, and generate aggregate statistics. We do not track or record information about individuals. Examples of information collected include:
1. Internet domain (.edu for educational accounts, .com for commercial
accounts) and the IP address;
2. Type of browser and operating system used;
3. Date and time of access;
4. Pages visited; and
5. Referring URL, if applicable.
Information Provided Voluntarily
If you elect to provide personal information, as in sending an email to
one of our online email boxes or filling out an online form, we use that
information to respond and to provide the requested information. We do
not collect information for commercial marketing purposes.
SUMMIT Patron Information
SUMMIT, Syracuse University Library’s online system, stores personal
information in patron records . This information is received directly
from the ID system and includes personal name, address (permanent, temporary,
email), telephone number, Social Security number, SU ID number, items
currently checked out, fines/fees owed, and a history of fines/fees paid.
Patron records are retained for two years regardless of whether the individual represented has ceased to be affiliated with the University. After two years patron records will be deleted from the online system.
Interacting with the Libraries
In order for current Syracuse University students, faculty, and staff
to 'do business' with the Library -- that is, check out materials, request
materials, access off-campus resources via the proxy server, etc. -- the
Library maintains personal information about users in a variety of databases,
including SUMMIT, ILLiad, and MyLibrary. The Library uses the information
in these patron records only to interact with and provide service to library
patrons.
