Oxford English Dictionary
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is is a historical dictionary, tracing the meaning and history of over half a million words, both present and past. Usage of words is documented through 2.5 million quotations from English language sources, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books. For each word in the OED, quotations with the earliest usage of a word appear first, and the meanings which have developed more recently appear further down the entry or as a series of branches describing other meanings.
