How to Submit Course Reserves: A Step-by-Step Guide

Syracuse University Library now delivers digital reserve items and reserve lists through Blackboard. This new system provides a single point of access for instructors and students for online reserve services. Please review the step-by-step guide below or the Help video to assist you in submitting your course reserve.

Go to the URL http://blackboard.syr.edu/ to connect to Blackboard.


Log in to Blackboard using your NetID and password.

Select the course for which you would like to add reserve materials.

Choose Control Panel in the Tools area on the left side of the screen.

Choose Course Reserve Administration in the Course Tools section.

Choose Add/Edit reserve items in the Ares Course Reserve: Management section.

Choose Add Reserve Items a second time in the Instructor Class Tools section on the left.

Select the type of material you are adding.

For each item you are adding, fill in the required elements in the appropriate form and specify how the item will be supplied.

Provide copyright information, indicating whether you have permission to use the work or consider your use to qualify for the fair use exemption under copyright law; refer to http://www.lib.umn.edu/copyright/checklist.phtml for more information on making a fair use determination. If not a fair use, e.g. exceeds a single article from a journal issue or a single chapter from a book, or repeat use of the same material for a subsequent semester, check the NO box.

If you chose “I will upload a file?, you will be prompted for the file location.

If you chose “I will bring the material…? or “Please have library staff pull the material…?, you will receive a confirmation message.

You will also see a list of items you have requested and their respective statuses.

N.B. Instructors wishing to merge multiple sections or cross-listed courses into one course in Blackboard should do so BEFORE requesting reserve materials. All reserves should be requested through the merged course rather than through the individual sections or cross-listed courses.
