Overview

Syracuse University Library supports the University curriculum by providing restricted access to materials that have been designated by faculty as required reading for specific courses and will pursue copyright permission in cases where fair use does not apply. Books, book chapters, articles, online materials such as e-journal articles and web sites, and other materials are made available by reserve units located in E.S. Bird Library, Architecture Reading Room, Science and Technology Library and its branches.

The Library provides online access to items that fall within fair use guidelines. To check if your item qualifies under the fair use exemption copyright law please use the Fair Use Analysis Tool to make a determination. Syracuse University Library applies U.S. copyright law (Title 17, US Code) and revisions to that law, such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA, PL 105-304) to library reserves. We are unable to digitize entire books or journal issues and some images may not be suitable for scanning and online viewing.

Syracuse University Library now delivers digital course reserve items and reserve lists through Blackboard.

You will need to log into Blackboard and follow the steps indicated in How to Submit Course Reserves: A Step-by-Step Guide.

For more information go to Blackboard support page for new users or send an email to fachelp@syr.edu.

Please note this overview only applies to Syracuse University Library Reserves. For other reserve policies contact:

Guidelines

Use the Fair Use Analysis Tool to determine if an item qualifies under fair use exemption. Note that in order to comply with fair use guidelines:

  • Materials will be placed on reserve at the initiative of the faculty for the sole purpose of educational use.
  • All copyrighted materials will be removed from reserve at the end of each semester.
  • For copyrighted materials, the original copyright statement from the item or a copyright warning notice will appear on an introductory page or screen.

For digital reserves, acceptable materials include:

  • a single article from a journal issue
  • a single chapter or less than 10% of a book
  • digital audio files
  • materials created by the faculty, such as lecture notes and exams

If your need exceeds these guidelines, please answer NO to the copyright question on the Add Reserve Item form in Blackboard and the library will pursue permission from the copyright holder.

Materials are due back before closing of the following day, regardless of what time they were checked out

3 day reserve Materials may be taken out of the library
