Course Reserves FAQ – New Reserve Procedures for Faculty

Course Reserves Home

Q: To which libraries do these new processes apply?

A: This document refers to reserve services in E. S. Bird Library, ArchitectureReading Room and the Science and Technology Library and its branches. The Barclay Law Library will continue to use SUMMIT for course reserve.

Q: Can I still submit materials for reserve using the old web form?

A: Beginning with Fall 2007 reserves, all requests will be submitted through Blackboard. The link to the web form will be replaced with a link to Blackboard by August 15, 2007. We encourage you to become familiar with the Blackboard submission process as soon as possible; please see the Step by Step guide. The Library will continue to work with faculty/instructors throughout the year to help in the transition.

Q: Can I still put items on Reserve in SUMMIT?

A: Digital items will be accessible via Blackboard only. Physical items that need to be checked out from a library circulation desk will retain a record in SUMMIT. However, the request to place items on reserve, whether digital or physical must be submitted via Blackboard.

Q: How will students know what is on Reserve?

A:Students and Instructors access reserves via the same Blackboard link: http://blackboard.syr.edu/. All reserve materials will be listed in Blackboard courses under the Course Tools/Course Reserve link. Materials available in digital form will be accessible directly in Blackboard. Books and other physical (hardcopy) materials will have a pointer to where it can be found in the library.

Q: What if I use WebCT or another courseware system?

A: All reserve requests must be submitted through Blackboard. If you use a system, such as WebCT, that allows access only by registered students in the class, you do not need to use Blackboard to provide access to the materials. You may choose to download digital items and upload them into your WebCT course. You could also provide your own list of any books or other items that need to be checked out from the library.

Q: Who can put materials on Reserve?

A: Instructors (Faculty) and their designated TA/GA (proxy user) may add items to the class reserve list. Send email to fachelp@syr.edu or call 443-2677 to enable access for your TA or GA. Library staff may also place materials on reserve for the instructor after the faculty member has activated the course. See the Step by Step guide for more information about this process.

Q: When can I submit my reserve requests?

A: Requests for reserves for any given semester may be submitted several weeks prior to the start of the semester. For Fall 2007 reserves, items may be added starting August 15th. Requests are generally processed in the order received.
