Book Arts at SUL:

RESOURCES

These pages are designed as a resource for students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts' School of Art and Design studying "the book" as a concept and structure and support presentations done for students, primarily in the Foundation Program.

Resources include images of examples from the collection of the Special Collections Research Center, "canned" subject searches of the Library's catalog, and a listing of examples elsewhere sorted by structure.

Other Events:
  • Brodsky Series for Library Conservation: Video of lectures by John Dean, Hedi Kyle, and Gary Frost on conservation/book arts topics and structures.
  • Basically Books – The Artwork of Susan Joy Share: In Basically Books: The Artwork of Susan Joy Share, the artist, bookbinder and performer, will show slides and video of her magical handmade boxes and books whose colorful contents include expanding structures, animated objects, and percussive sounds. Share combines a multitude of media derived from traditional bookbinding, sewing, painting, collage and sculpture. She will also show work she created for public art commissions in Anchorage.
  • Stations of a Bookbinder's Life – Twenty-five Years in the Field: In this lecture for the Cornell University Bookarts Club on October 11, 2007, Peter Verheyen, bookbinder, conservator, and founder of the Syracuse Conservation Laboratory, discusses his experiences as an apprentice in Germany, work as a binder and conservator, and the many twists and turns his career has taken over the past twenty-five years. Audio and PowerPoint slides available.

For the most comprehensive listing of book arts related resources see the Book Arts Web.
