Political Science Data

The best source of Political Science data is ICPSR. In addition to many of the studies listed below, they have an extensive collection of public opinion polls. Users interested in poll results may also want to look at Roper Center for Public Opinion Research through our Lexis/Nexis database.

Voting and Elections

  • National Election Studies high quality data on voting, public opinion, and political participation that serve the research needs of social scientists, teachers, students, policy makers and journalists concerned with the theoretical and empirical foundations of mass politics in a democratic society.
  • Federal Election Commission In 1975, Congress created the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to administer and enforce the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) - the statute that governs the financing of federal elections.
  • The Record of American Democracy, 1984-1990 Data include election returns, socioeconomic summaries, and demographic measures of the American public at unusually low levels of geographic aggregation.
  • Election 2000 at ICPSR data and information related to the United States federal election held on November 7, 2000.
  • National Black Election Study Series The purpose of this data series was to provide large-scale scientific surveys and make possible in-depth investigation of the political attitudes, perceptions, and electoral behaviors of a large, representative national sample of adult Black Americans.
  • Campaign Expenditures in the United States Series The series provides longitudinal data about the United States Senate or House of Representatives committees involved in federal campaign finance within an election cycle, and on each registered candidate for the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives.
  • General Election Data for the United States, 1950-19 "This data collection consists of national files containing county-level returns for elections to the offices of president, United States senator and representative, and governor. Also included are returns for one additional statewide office (usually attorney general or secretary of state) for those states that elected state offices in 1970 through 1990."
  • Electoral Data for Counties in the United States: Presidential and Congressional Races, 1840-1972 This collection contains county-level returns for elections to the United States presidency and to the United States House of Representatives for the years 1840 to 1972
  • Candidate Name and Constituency Totals, 1788-1990 This data collection provides the names of candidates, political party name and ICPSR party ID code, and the number of votes received by each candidate in the constituency for elections between 1788 and 1990.
  • Elections to the United States House of Representatives, 1898-1992 Contains election returns for elections to the United States House of Representatives from 1898 to 1992. Votes from each biennial election are tallied by Democratic and Republican candidate and are further grouped by state and congressional district.
  • Voter Registration in the United States, 1968-1988 This collection tabulates the number of registered voters who were eligible to cast ballots in biennial national elections in the United States between 1968 and 1988. Its purpose is to furnish additional research data on registration trends, the relationship between registration and voting, and the role and strength of political parties, and the degree of partisan competition.
  • Referenda and Primary Election Materials This data collection contains election returns at the county and state levels from the mid-nineteenth century to the late twentieth century for primary and general elections on statewide referenda, constitutional amendments, state House/Senate joint resolutions, and initiated measures.
  • Current Population Survey, Voting and Registration Supplement The CPS has a voting and registration supplement in the years 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000

Government

  • United States Congressional Roll Call Voting Records Series Roll call voting records for both chambers of the United States Congress through the second session of the 104th Congress are presented in this data collection.
  • Consolidated Federal Funds Report The CFFR data are obtained from numerous federal government agencies and describe federal government expenditures or obligations in state, county, and subcounty areas of the United States, the District of Columbia, and United States territories.

Miscelaneous

  • General Social Survey Main areas covered in the GSS include socioeconomic status, social mobility, social control, the family, race relations, sex relations, civil liberties, and morality. The GSS is also available for online analysis

International

  • Cross-National Time-Series Data Archive "The Cross-National Time-Series Data Archive (also referred to as CNTS) offers a comprehensive listing of international and national country data facts. The database has statistical information on a range of countries, with data entries ranging from 1815 to the present. It offers a comprehensive extent of variables and country facts. The information base goes back to 1815, thus assuring you the most complete and farthest reaching archive of demographic values." Due to our licensing agreement, anyone wishing to use this data must contact the Numeric Data Services Librarian.
  • European Election Study, 1994 The European Election Study, 1994 (EES-94), is a study of the electorates of the 12 member states of the European Community. The study focuses in particular on the fourth elections to the European Parliament conducted in June 1994 and is derived from questions asked in Eurobarometers 40-42.
  • Comparative Study of Electoral Systems, 1996-2001
    Comparative Study of Electoral Systems, 2001-2006
    An ongoing collaborative program of crossnational research among national election studies designed to advance the understanding of electoral behavior across polities.
  • Lijphart Elections Archive: a research collection of district level election results for approximately 350 national legislative elections in 26 countries.
  • United Nations Roll Call Data, 1946 -1985 This collection consists of roll calls voted upon in the United Nations. It includes votes of the General Assembly, five additional special sessions and selected committees.
  • Afrobarometer Survey Series The series represents a large-scale, cross-national survey research project designed to systematically map mass attitudes to democracy, markets, and civil society in more than a dozen sub-Saharan African nations, and ultimately, to track the evolution of such attitudes in selected nations over time.
  • Eurobarometer Survey Series These surveys were designed to measure public awareness of, and attitudes toward the Common Market and other European Community institutions in complementary fashion.
  • World Values Surveys and European Values Surveys Series The WVS project explores the hypothesis that mass belief systems are changing in ways that have important economic, political, and social consequences.
  • British General Election Survey Series The British General Election Survey has three general aims: (1) to collect data with a view to describing and explaining the outcome of general elections, (2) to analyze long-term changes in political attitudes and behavior from the early 1960s to the present, and (3) to organize and make available these data in a form suitable for a wide range of research.
  • Dutch Parliamentary Election Study (DPES) Series The major substantive areas consistently covered include the respondents' attitudes toward and expectations of the government and its effectiveness in both domestic and foreign policy, the most important problems facing the people of the Netherlands, the respondents' voting behavior and participation history, and his/her knowledge of and faith in the nation's political leaders.
  • German Election Studies Series Pre-election and post-election wave data furnish information on attitudes and electoral behavior of the German electorate, including their views on other political, social, economic, and personal issues.
  • Israeli Election Study Series The series provides data on Israeli voters' attitudes toward national issues, such as the issues of peace and security, defense, Arab-Israeli relations, Jerusalem, Lebanon, Palestinian terrorism and statehood, democracy in Israel, the economy, minorities, and religion, and the party and politicians best suited to address these issues effectively.
