U.S. Census Questions and Answers

This page will, hopefully, help guide you to the easiest method of obtaining the information you want. Since it is always a work in progress, please feel free to submit your own questions (or answers if you have them!) to the Numeric Data Services Librarian.

Q: I want to know how many people - male, female, children - live in Syracuse, NY
A: Use the FactSheet

Q: I also need the same information for Buffalo, Rochester, Onondaga County and Los Angeles
A: Again, use the FactSheet. The FactSheet is the easiest way to get basic information; it's often easier to enter multiple names multiple times than going through the other methods.

Q: I want to know how many people - male, female, children - live in Syracuse, NY, but I need the information at the tract or block level.
A: You'll need to use one of the datasets. If you want all of the tracts/block groups/blocks, then the List extraction method is suitable. If you only want some, and have not memorized the numbering sequence, then you'll need to use the Map method.

Q: I want information for the University Neighborhood at the block level.
A: You'll need to use one of the datasets. Since the University Neighborhood may be made up of some complete tracts and parts of others, you may want to use a combination of the Map and Geo within Geo methods. You can use the Map to determine which complete tracts you want, then use the geo within geo to retrieve all blocks within those tracts. Then use the map method again to retrieve the remainder of the blocks.

Q: I want census information for school districts.
A: This information is provided by the School District Demographics System at the National Center for Education Statistics. Individual school districts may also have similar or additonal information on their own web sites.
