Using the G-SIC
About the Center
The Center is a facility dedicated to the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and statistical data analysis. The goal of the lab is to promote, provide and assist the Syracuse University community with their GIS software and statistical data needs. The G-SIC is part of a site license agreement that Syracuse University has with ESRI. This site license allows access and use of all license agreement software. This includes ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView and its extensions, ESRI Data sets, and other ESRI programs. The G-SIC also provides SAS, Stata, SPSS, and Minitab for statistical applications.Goals of the G-SIC
- The goal of the Center is to promote and foster the use of GIS and statistical analysis, and to serve the GIS needs of the Faculty, students and staff of Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
G-SIC Orientation
A brief orientation session is given the first time you use the Center.Using the G-SIC
Once the orientation session has been completed, users may use any workstation but are limited to blocks of three hours at a time. The Center may be used by registered students, faculty and staff of Syracuse University and SUNY ESF. Members of the general public can also use the Center when using U.S. Government depository software, programs, and data sets.
Rules
To use any workstation or software program the user must first complete the sign-in form and abide by the following rules each time they use the lab:
- Users working with GIS, mapping, or numeric data have priority use of these machines.
- No food or drinks are allowed in the lab at any time. NO EXCEPTIONS.
- Users may be asked to produce a valid SU or SUNY-ESF ID.
- The workstations are not backed up. Users are responsible for saving their work on their personal directory or drives.
- ALL printouts will be paid for at the time you send your print job to one of the lab's printers using the Print Quota Management System. You may add money to your account online from the SU Print Quota website. PQM
- Anyone found tampering with Lab hardware and/or software will be asked to leave.
- Copying or installing software, downloading or storing MP3 files is NOT allowed.
- Please bring headphones if you wish to play music CDs
Restrictions
- All equipment in the Center may be used for any class related project using maps and or data or any of the special equipment in the lab.
- Software will be used only for educational purposes. NO software may be loaded on computers that is not the property of the SU, SU library or the G-SIC lab.

- Help you find data sets, with scanning, or printing files
- Help you with trouble-shooting any equipment or software problems
- Help with printing your projects to the printers
- Refer you to a librarian for in-depth assistance or questions
Please NOTE that the Assistants:
- Do not provide in-depth software training
- Cannot do your project for you
G-SIC Printing Prices
NOTE! As of Feb. 14, 2008 GSIC lab printer punch cards are no longer valid. NOTE!
All unused GSIC lab printer cards may be taken to the Library Business Office
in the lower level of Bird Library for a refund,
but only until April 30, 2008.
Print jobs will now be charged when the job is sent to one of the three printers in the lab.
Payment is subtracted from the users Print Quota account at the following rates.
