The Collections
The Library's Map Room is the location for cartographic materials in many formats. The holdings consist of over 175,000 sheet maps, over 4500 atlases, 80,000 aerial photos, 50,000 maps in microform, a small number of historical maps on slides, a growing collection of maps in electronic format, and an extensive travel file. There is also a collection of Sanborn fire insurance atlases in paper, on microfilm, and CD-ROM, along with a teaching collection of globes and wall maps. In addition, the Map Room contains a reference collection of gazetteers, place-name guides, dictionaries, bibliographies, directories, and guide-books.The Map Room has three large worktables for patrons to use. Paper copies from microforms are also available from Copy Services or from self-serve reader-printers in the Media Services Department, lower level.
To Access the Maps
Records for most of our maps, atlases and other cartographic materials are included in SUMMIT, the library's online catalog. A member of the staff will be glad to assist you with any questions you may have regarding the collections.Circulation
Most maps and travel information are allowed to be checked out at the Maps/Documents Reference Desk, 3rd floor Bird Library. A valid SU ID is required. Atlases and Map Room reference titles do not circulate.Special Services

Atlases
- Wide range of world and foreign national atlases
- Excellent coverage for North America and New York state
- Historical New York State county atlases in paper and microfilm
- Extensive Sanborn Atlas collection for MA, VT, CT, RI, PA, NJ, DC, and NY on microfilm and NYC on film and paper. Oswego, Oneida, Onondaga, and Madison counties are available on CD-ROM
Topographic Maps
- Topographic series providing coverage for most of the world at a scale of at least 1:500,000
- Comprehensive coverage of the United States, including all published U.S.G.S. 1:250,000 1:100,000, 1:62,500 and 1:24,000 topographic quadrangle maps
- Good coverage for Canada at 1:50,000 and for Europe at various scales
- General coverage of Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Australia
- Extensive collection of DMA and NOS nautical charts
Thematic Maps
- Coverage of all parts of the world, especially North America and the United States. Subjects include: physical and biological sciences, human, cultural and political geography, economics, forestry, agriculture, manufacturing, technology, transportation, communications, trade, the military, and historical geography.
Road Maps
- All 50 states and all possessions/territories of the United States
- All Mexican states
- All Canadian provinces
- Most foreign countries
City Maps
- All U.S. state capitals, the 100 most populous U.S. cities (1990 census), and the 25 most populated cities in Canada, plus over 100 other cities in North America
- Extensive coverage for New York state and the city of Syracuse
- Most foreign capitals and major cities

- Over 5,000 pamphlets, brochures, maps and guide-books from all 50 states, all Canadian provinces and over 75 foreign countries
