The Syracuse University Library has about 8,000 items in video format (videocassettes, DVDs and videodiscs) and 3,000 16mm films that cover all subject areas. This collection is located in Media Services, 008 E.S. Bird Library. All items in the general collection are listed in SUMMIT, the library online catalog. For tips on searching for videos see Searching Videos in the SUMMIT catalog. The primary purpose of this collection is for use by Syracuse University faculty in classroom, face-to-face teaching, and in-library viewing by students and other members of the campus community to support their curricular and research needs. Faculty may book items for classroom use up to four months in advance for pick up on the day before use by contacting the Media Office, 008 E.S. Bird Library (443-2438) or by filling an Video Collection Booking Form. Faculty are encouraged to book as early as possible to insure that the items are available on the day they are needed for class. Students may also borrow videos to use in a classroom presentation on the day of the presentation with the permission of their instructor. Policy on Use of the Library Video/Film CollectionThe Library has developed its videocassette, DVD, and film collections primarily in support of classroom teaching at Syracuse University. For that reason, and because copyright and /or licensing agreements impose restrictions and limitations on their use, full borrowing privileges are only extended to faculty and teaching assistants. All SU-affiliated users are welcome to view these materials in the Library. The Library has established the following conditions for the use of videocassettes, DVDs, or films: 1) SU-affiliated individuals or groups may view videocassettes, DVDs, or films, in the library at any hour the media desk is open for service. Ask in Media Services about scheduling one of the Library's media viewing rooms for viewing 16mm films. 2) Syracuse University faculty, and teaching assistants with faculty authorization (Teaching Assistants Video Use Form), may borrow up to three individual titles for up to three days under the following conditions: a. For private review in order to prepare for classroom or assigned viewing. b. To show in a regularly scheduled University course carrying an official course number. 3) Students may also borrow videos to use in a classroom presentation on the day of the presentation with the permission of their instructor. A Student Classroom Video Use Form is available online. IMPORTANT: Public performance (showing to any campus or other group not formally enrolled in a regularly scheduled course) may violate copyright restrictions and/or the Library's licensing agreements, and is prohibited . For additional information please contact the Media Services office at 443-2438. Viewing FacilitiesMedia Services has in-library viewing facilities for the use of its video collection. Headphones are available from the Media Desk. A sound junction box is from available from the Media Desk to allow up to four individuals to connect headphones to a viewing station. For larger groups inquire at the Media Desk to see if a viewing room is available. Viewing is also available for 16mm films from our collection.
Use of the Video CollectionCourse ReservesSyracuse University faculty and teaching assistants may place Library videos on reserve for their courses for a two week period at any point during the semester. Personally owned videos may be placed on reserve by faculty for an entire semester subject to any copyright restrictions. Classroom UseSyracuse University faculty and registered teaching assistants (Teaching Assistant Video Use Form) may borrow up to three individual titles for up to three days to show in a regularly scheduled University course carrying an official course number or for private review in order to prepare for classroom or assigned viewing. Students may borrow videos to use in a classroom presentation on the day of the presentation with permission from their instructor. A Student Classroom Video Use Form is available online. Video items needed for classroom use should be reserved (booked) in advance. Videos should be booked as soon as the presentation date is known, but no later than seven days before the planned showing. Booking can be done in-person, by phone (443-2438), or by using the Video Collection Online Booking Form. Instructors may request that the Library purchase a new title by contacting Media Services, their subject specialists or by using the online Purchase Request Form for Videos or DVDs.
