General Information About the Slide Collection

The Slide Collection is part of the Fine Arts Department and is the largest such collection in the region, numbering over 350,000 images. While based in the arts and designed originally to support these programs, the Slide Collection also serves the needs of the entire University community for visual images. It is considered a teaching rather than a research collection.

Slides are organized in one of three ways. The largest portion of the Collection is cataloged using a modified Fogg Classification System. Materials are organized by medium: architecture, painting, sculpture and the design arts. Within that division, slides are then organized by location: country, city, and building type for architectural images. Painting, sculpture and the design arts are also organized first by country of the artist, then either thematically or by date of the work of art. In depth holdings, international in scope, exist for most of the subjects covered in the classified section. To serve the needs of the broadest spectrum of patrons, needing quick access to basic materials, subject and textbooks sets have also been developed.
