Think & Act Green!

Everybody's doing it, so why don't you?

In celebration of Earth Day, DISC wants to share some resources, tips and information on what you can do for our planet. Sometimes it's the small things that make the biggest difference. For example, did you know that recycling just one Coke can saves enough energy to power your television for three hours? And just think what could be accomplished if everyone on the planet picked up just one piece of trash instead of walking past—that would make the Earth 6,677,563,921 pieces of trash cleaner!

So go ahead and jump on the green bandwagon! Tell your mom, "Yes, if Kelsey sets her monitor and hard drive to power off after 15 minutes of inactivity, I will too. It's not like she's jumping off a cliff!" Somehow, I don't think she'll mind. And who knows, maybe she'll set her monitor and hard drive to power off after 15 minutes of inactivity too.

Think Green

Tips and Resources

GreenPrint World Edition

This free print utility helps you eliminate printing wasted pages (those with just a URL, banner ad, legal disclaimer, etc.) and gives you control over what you print. On average, you'll save about 1,400 pages per year. Not to mention the ink savings. You also have the ability to save your "print" as a PDF. We love this at DISC.

Save Paper, Narrow Your Word Margins

The only time to set your Word margins at their default 1.25" is when your teacher has assigned you to write a set number of pages rather than a set number of words. And that doesn't really fool them anyway.

Eco-Friendly Printing

A list of articles from Planet Green including:

Think Before You Print That Email

Also, consider saving that email as a PDF rather than printing it out on paper.

How to Green Your Electronics

This guide from Treehugger.com features the top 10 ways to green your technology. Check out Tip #2: Kill Vampire Power!

Put Your Computer to Sleep

P.S.: Your screensaver doesn't really save your screen; it just gobbles energy. That's why DISC sets its monitors to turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity.

Green Your Media

Download Your Books and Magazines

Browse Titles Online, Before You Buy

You wouldn't believe the things you can get from the Library online. For magazines, search by title at the E-Journal Locator.

Search the Web for All Things Green

A search tool called Green Maven is detailed here.

THE COLOR YOU WANT

If you're tired of your prints not looking like you expect them to, it may be your color settings. The default color settings that Adobe Photoshop (and the entire Creative Suite) is configured with are not designed for the average person using an inkjet or laser printer. Get the best color possible by using our color and PDF export settings on your files. Instructions and files are available for download in the Tips section.
