Offsite Storage of Library Collections

To make the best use of the Library’s physical space for increasing services to students and faculty and to relieve over-crowding in the stacks, it was necessary to move approximately 150,000 volumes out of the Library and into our current offsite storage facility at the Warehouse. This move was planned for many months and took place March through July of 2007.

Subject specialists were involved in these relocation decisions which often involved faculty as well.

In broad outline, the materials moved were:

Materials moved to the Warehouse:

  • Journals (pre-1996 volumes)
  • Multi-volume sets (low use: little or no circulation in the past five years)
  • Older materials (pre- 1970) with little or no circulation in the past five years
  • US Serial Set (print version) and other selected government documents (in compliance with Federal regulations)

Retrieval is available for those materials located off-site at the Warehouse. Items can be recalled and brought back to campus upon demand. In addition, titles that are recalled frequently will be returned permanently to one of the campus libraries. Lists of the resources located in Warehouse are available online to the University community. The Library’s online catalog, SUMMIT, is up-to-date and accurately reflects what is in the Warehouse.
