Fine Policies

Date Due

The date an item is due is stamped on the Date Due slip located inside the front or back cover of each item. Borrowers are responsible for returning materials by the due date. All items are subject to recall, which will change the due date. Failure to return materials by the due date will result in fines or other charges.

Grace Period

The library will not charge fines on materials returned within four days of the due date. There is no grace period for recalled items.

Fines

The overdue fine is $0.50 per day per item, beginning with the first day an item is overdue, up to $15.00 per item. The overdue fine is not refundable. Fines for reserve and recalled materials vary.

Overdue Notices

Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive a notice does not exempt borrowers from overdue, replacement, or processing charges.

Lost Books

Any item not returned within 15 days of the due date will be presumed lost. Borrowers will receive a bill for the replacement cost of the item, plus overdue fines.

Return of Books Billed as Lost

Borrowers who return materials for which they have been billed pay only the overdue fine. Borrowers who return an item after they have paid for it will receive a refund for the replacement cost.

Recalled Books

Any book may be recalled for use by another patron or for the Reserve Room. The date due for a recalled book is indicated on the recall notice. The overdue fine is $2.00 per day per book, beginning with the first day overdue, up to $30.00 per book.

Reserve Materials

For one-day and three-day Reserve materials, the overdue fine is $5.00 per day per item, beginning with the first day overdue. All other Reserve materials carry a fine of $.50 per hour. The maximum fine for reserve materials is $30.00 per item. There is no grace period for recalled or Reserve desk items.

Faculty Borrowing

The loan period for faculty extends to the end of each academic year. Faculty receive reminder notices in advance of the return/renewal date. Faculty will receive recall notices for items requested by other library users, or for reserves, and must return these materials by the date indicated on the recall notice to avoid fines.

Faculty will incur fines for overdue materials borrowed from reserves. They will also be charged replacement and processing costs for lost library materials. The fine schedule for recalls and reserves is indicated above.

Borrowing privileges may be denied if needed materials have not been returned or fines paid. Syracuse University students with unpaid fines will be placed on financial hold at the Bursar's Office and may not register for classes or receive transcripts until books are returned and fines paid.
