Courseware and Library Resources

The Syracuse University Library offers an extensive collection of research databases and electronic journal titles that can be used to to supplement your online course. This page is intended to provide training and support for the seamless integration of these information resources into a courseware package such as Blackboard or WebCT.

In addition, librarians can assist in the selection of appropriate materials and offer instruction to your students to guide them through the research process. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, contact your Subject Librarian or Abby Kasowitz-Scheer, Head of Instructional Programs, at 443-1943.

Note: These instructions are offered for those faculty members who would like to integrate library resources into courseware on their own. We would be happy to assist you with any part of this process. Contact Abby Kasowitz-Scheer for referral to the appropriate Library staff.

See below for information on technical assistance with Blackboard and WebCT.

BulletImporting and Linking

There are two ways to include library resources as readings in your course. You can either download the materials and import them into your course, or you can create direct links to the desired items in Library subscription services.

2. Creating Persistent URLs (PURLs) to Library Resources

If you would like assistance in identifying, locating, or linking to full-text resources through courseware, feel free to contact Abby Kasowitz-Scheer, 443-1943.

BulletDatabases

If your students are expected to complete a research project, you can direct them to relevant databases by linking to resources on the Library's Databases Main Menu. Library Subject Specialists can work with you to develop a list of relevant research databases and other web sites.

BulletAuthentication

Remote access to Library subscription materials requires a log in that is in addition to the required log in to your Blackboard or WebCT Course. Students attempting to link to Library subscriptions from off campus will be prompted to log in using their NetID and password. For more information about the authentication process, see Instructions for Remote Access.

Note: This additional log in will be required for materials that students are asked to link to, not to materials that you have already imported into your online course.

BulletCopyright Considerations

Items integrated into your online course are subject to U.S. copyright law (Title 17, US Code). For specific information regarding licensing restrictions, consult the terms and conditions provided by the publisher or vendor.

BulletCourse Reserve

The Library continues to offer print and digital course reserve services through the SUMMIT Reserve System. In addition to placing complete works physically on reserve for your class, the Library Reserve Unit can provide scanned articles, e-journal articles, and book chapters. We can also digitize your class notes, sample exams, or other materials on request. See the Course Reserves page for more information.

BulletDigitization

The Library's Digital Imaging Services Center (DISC) supports faculty needs for other scanned media, such as color photographs, line art, and maps.
