African American Studies

Supplying facets of the area of African-American studies are several volumes of African travels, the printed material in the Gerrit Smith collection, the works of Harriet Beecher Stowe and some of the more elusive writings of Richard Wright. A small but important collection on John Brown, the abolitionist, supplements the Gerrit Smith material.

As well, radical writings of African American authors have been added to the collections to support the focus on the creative expressions of Radicalism. These include works from the Abolitionist movement as well as later segments of African American literature including the works of novelists such as Lloyd L. Brown, Chester Himes, and Willard Motley. The periodical Crisis is also included in the collections and includes examples of fine illustration as well as literature.
