Adding Academic Content to Blackboard Courses: A guide for faculty

This guide will assist faculty in controlling and managing their own curricular content. It includes step-by-step instructions on how to incorporate library and other resources into Blackboard courses, as well as links to other related information. For detailed information regarding classroom use of copyrighted and licensed resources, see Using Copyrighted Works in Teaching: A Guide for Syracuse University Faculty.

Using Electronic Articles

1. Find the article

  1. Go to the Summon search box.
  2. Search for your article title.
  3. Browse the results list for the matching article.
  4. If the article is available in full-text, click the Full Text Online link to connect.
  5. If you didn't find the article online, check for a print copy in the Libraries (see Using Print Resources below).

2. Create a link to the article

  1. Content in library databases is often subject to shifts or changes, so when providing links to articles, it is important to find and use permanent URLs or permalinks to link to the content.
  2. Databases vary in how they present permalinks, but a permalink can usually be found in the abstract or full display of the article as in the example below.
  3. Permalink example

  4. Because of the authentication process needed to access restricted resources from off-campus, it is important to preface your permalinks with Syracuse University' proxy URL: http://libezproxy.syr.edu/login?url= so in the above example, the permanent link would be:

    http://libezproxy.syr.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/2333229363?accountid=14214

  5. Contact the Libraries through Ask us if you need assistance creating a permanent URL.

3. Upload the permanent link to Blackboard

  1. In your BlackBoard course, turn the Edit Mode ON and select a content area.
  2. Click Build Content > URL.
  3. Type a Name for the link.
  4. Type or copy/paste the website address in the URL box (example: http://www.syr.edu/).
  5. Optional: Add text in the Text box, attach a file in the Content area, set Options such as availability, tracking, and time/date restrictions.
  6. Click Submit.
