Biography

Photograph of Henry Woessner

Henry Woessner was an instructor in the School of Education and the Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in the 1960s.

Woessner was born in New York City in 1931. He received his B.S. from the State Teachers College at New Paltz in 1955 and his M.S. from the State Teachers College at Albany in 1958. He then worked as a teacher at Bethlehem Central School in Delmar, New York. Woessner also served in the Special Weapons Unit of the United States military for two years.

Woessner arrived at Syracuse University in September 1960 as a graduate student, studying philosophy and American studies. During the spring semester of 1961 Woessner worked as a graduate assistant to Professor Herbert Burns of the School of Education. For the next academic year, 1961-1962, Woessner acted as a dual teaching assistant for both the School of Education and the Maxwell Graduate School. In 1964, Woessner began to work towards a PhD and was appointed to the faculty at the Maxwell Graduate School. During his time as an instructor Woessner was involved in the teaching of social philosophy and education, education of American ideals, problems of American citizenship, and an introductory course for freshman in public affairs.

While at Syracuse University, Woessner involved himself in a variety of extracurricular projects. In 1966 he founded the Academic Communications Corps (originally named Academic Peace Corps), an organization that aimed to link student volunteers to the research work of professors. He also served as advisor to the Daily Orange and the Chancellor’s Representative on the Board of Student Publications from 1966 to 1967.

Woessner’s faculty appointment was not renewed for the 1967-1968 academic year and he left Syracuse in 1967. In 1969 he was appointed as an assistant, and later associate, professor in the School of Educational Policy and Community Studies at the University of Wisconsin.
