Historical Note

Photograph of Ladies' Glee and Guitar Club, 1895

Students have participated in musical groups since the early days of the University. The first groups were glee and instrumental clubs, including the University Glee and Banjo Club and Ladies Glee and Guitar Club. The Syracuse University Marching Band was founded in 1901 and soon became a fixture of the University, playing at athletic events, campus circuses, and Moving-Up Day. Today, many musical groups are associated with the University's Setnor School of Music, including the Symphony Orchestra and Band, Hendricks Chapel Choir, Women's Choir, and Wind Ensemble. Syracuse University also has a long tradition of chants and songs at special events on campus, including athletic events. Many of these songs were written by Syracuse University students and alumni.

Scope and Content Note

The Syracuse University Student Activities Music Collection consists of materials related to musical student groups and songs sung by students at athletic events and other special events on campus. The collection is arranged in two series:

The Music series features eighteen Songs of Syracuse songbooks dating from 1904 to 1950 and song sheets from athletic events. Additionally, the collection includes sheet music for pieces written by Syracuse University students and alumni. These works include "The Orange Flag" (1905), "Bill Orange" (1907), and "Syracuse Drinking Song" (1910). A 1982 orchestral arrangement of Syracuse University's Alma Mater by William Wilkinson can also be found in this series. This series also includes several 78 and 33 1/3 rpm records, including four Songs of Syracuse albums (circa 1950) and The Syracuse University Marching Band Presents the Pride of the Orange (1972).

The Student Groups series contains performance advertisements, programs, and other materials related to musical student groups dating from the 1880s to the 1980s. These groups include the Chimemasters, Black Celestial Choir, glee and instrumental clubs and University bands and choirs.
