Finding aid created by: Katie Swingly
Date: 2014

Historical Note

The Society of the Sigma Xi is a science and engineering honor society founded in 1886 at Cornell University. Its members include dozens of Nobel Laureates, including Albert Einstein, Linus Pauling, James Watson and Francis Crick. The Syracuse University Chapter was chartered in 1906 with sixteen members, all Syracuse University faculty. It endeavored to “promote fellowship between those interested in scientific research, to recognize and encourage the work being done by its members, and to stimulate the interest of everyone in scientific matters.” The Chapter's first president was William H. Metzler, and the first secretary was A.M. Reese. While the charter members were all male, the Chapter later expanded to include female members. Those eligible for membership were graduate students, faculty, and outstanding undergraduate students. Sigma Xi held public lectures by prominent scientists from various fields of scientific research. In 1955, the Chapter established a Sigma Xi award to recognize excellent scientific research. The Chapter later expanded to encompass the greater Syracuse area but ceased activity in 2011.
