Finding aid created by: Anna Smallwood
Date: 2016

Historical Note

Before Sigma Alpha Epsilon was formally established at Syracuse University the fraternity was called the "Orange Club," which was founded in 1902. The New York Delta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was established at Syracuse University in 1907, after petitioning the National Convention of Sigma Alpha Epsilon in 1906. The fraternity continued off and on from 1963 to 1967 and even resorted to becoming a local organization called Phi Alpha. The chapter was reinstated in 1987 after being inactive since 1967. That same year, they began what would become their biggest fundraiser, Paddy Murphy Week. Based on a legend from the 1920s, Irish bootlegger Paddy Murphy was shot and killed. Leaving his fortune to his wife but not specifying who his wife was left several women competing to be his “widow.” Paddy Murphy Week included events such as a reenactment of the shoot-out, rape awareness sessions and skits for sororities who competed to be Paddy’s widow.
