Biography
Heman Howes Sanford was born in Madison, New York on September 29, 1829. He attended Madison University, now Colgate University, in Hamilton, New York from 1848 until 1854 and attained both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the Arts. Sanford had a far reaching educational background that led him to teach Greek, Mathematics, and the Classics in various institutions in New York, including Madison University, the Hamilton Academy and the Monro Collegiate Institute. He obtained his Doctorate of Philology in 1872 from Madison University.
After spending nearly a year traveling in Europe, he became a Professor of Latin at Syracuse University in late 1872 until his resignation in 1877. Sanford continued on to the University of Chicago in 1878 as a Professor of Latin and English Literature and was awarded an LL.D. in 1883. He resigned from Chicago University in 1882 in order to care for his ailing father, returned to the Syracuse area and began more personal works in retirement.
The reasoning behind Sanford's resignation from Syracuse University is unclear, but he was remembered by faculty and students fondly, having made a strong connection to the University and the alumni within the area during the years he lived close to campus. The home of Dr. Sanford at 404 Ostrom Avenue in Syracuse had for many years been one of the best known in the city, in part because of the many social, literary and religious gatherings there. Sanford became a licensed preacher in 1879 and was known to have contributed to secular and religious presses later in life. His more acknowledged publications are the "Genealogy of the John Howes Family" and the "Genealogy of the Win. Sanford Family," both regarded as excellent genealogical records for his family and those that lived in Madison, New York. Sanford died on June 23, 1909 in Glendale, California.
Scope and Content Note
The entire Heman Howes Sanford Diaries consist of 24 volumes, written by Sanford between the years of 1850 and 1909. The diaries have daily entries by Sanford, referencing his personal relationships, the weather and school duties. Some insight into his daily activities shows Sanford as detail oriented and devoutly Christian. There are some references to the city of Syracuse and Syracuse University in the diaries that he completed during his years as a professor at the University and during his retirement in Madison, New York.
