Biography

Photograph of Milton D. Raynor

Milton D. Raynor (1889-1974) studied mechanical engineering at Syracuse University and graduated in 1913.

Born in Free Port, Long Island, Raynor was a natural athlete and earned a scholarship to Syracuse University in 1910. He entered the College of Applied Science to study engineering and played catcher for the varsity baseball team all four years. Raynor worked hard to pay his way through college on his own; during summers he would return home to work for his father and played baseball for extra money.

Raynor eventually found work at an engineering firm after earning his degree. He continued to play baseball and even tried out for the Boston Red Sox before an injury to his arm ended his ideas of playing professionally. In 1917, Raynor served in World War I and was sent to France to do meteorology work for the Signal Corps. In 1919, he returned home and, unable to find any engineering jobs, returned to Long Island to work for his father. He remained physically active for most of his life, swimming and diving regularly until he injured his back performing a Flying Dutchman at the age of 65.

Milton D. Raynor died in 1974.
