Historical Note

The Alpha Chi Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha was founded at Syracuse University on March 15, 1913. Prior to being affiliated with Pi Kappa Alpha, brothers called themselves Zeta Rho fraternity, a local fraternity founded at Syracuse University in 1904. In the early 1920s, when Chancellor William P. Tolley was a Pi Kappa Alpha senior, the pledge class of Pi Kappa Alpha cut down a spruce tree from the property of the Chancellor's House near Christmastime. The fact that it came from the Chancellor's House was kept a secret, until Chancellor Tolley received a visitor 20 years after the incident and was informed of the exact location where the tree had been removed. The pledge class of 1967-1968 went to the Chancellor's House while Tolley was Chancellor to plant a tree to replace the one that the fraternity had taken over 40 years prior.
