Biography

Photograph of David Norton

David Norton was born on June 12, 1923 in Jamestown, New York. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Syracuse University in 1954 and 1956 respectively. Norton taught for the School of Journalism (Newhouse School) of Syracuse University for many years. He became an instructor in 1954, an assistant professor in 1958, and an associate professor in 1969.

Before his career at Syracuse University, Norton worked for various printing shops, including Martin Merz & Son of Jamestown, New York and, while at Syracuse University, he ran two printing presses: Castle Room Press and Spare Moments Press. Castle Room Press was also known as the Frederick W. Goudy Typographic Laboratory at the School of Journalism at Syracuse University and produced small quantities of student works. It was mostly used for advanced graphic arts classes at the University. Spare Moments Press was a private printing shop that Norton owned and ran out of the basement of his house. It was a pre-1900 print shop and Norton collected and used old printing face types and illustrations.

Norton retired from Syracuse University in 1985.
