Biography
Ernest Richard Moore was born in New York City on May 26, 1909. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from New York University, where he focused on the Spanish language and Spanish-American literature. Moore received his Ph.D. in Latin American literature from Cornell University in 1940. After serving as a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, Moore returned to Oberlin College, Ohio, where he previously had been teaching Spanish. In 1947, Moore was hired on as a professor and chairman of the Latin American Studies Program in the Romance Languages Department at Syracuse University.
Throughout his career, Moore often traveled to Mexico and other parts of Latin America to conduct his research. He was praised for both his literary work and his impressive personal library, which contained a vast number of books on Mexican literature and history. Moore published dozens of books and articles after receiving his doctorate, many of which focused on the lives of famous Latin American writers and revolutionaries.
Ernest R. Moore died in Mexico City on September 23, 1949.
Scope and Content Note
The Ernest R. Moore Papers contain two copies of his unpublished manuscript on the life of Carlos Maria de Bustamante, one bound and one unbound. The collection also contains his extensive notes on Bustamante and Jose Maria Heredia and other materials. Since all materials were given to the Syracuse University Archives undated, the Archives staff has estimated the dates of his papers between the year he received his Ph.D. from Cornell (1940) and the year he died (1949).

Acquisition Information
The Ernest R. Moore Papers were gifted to the Syracuse University Archives in two parts. Myron Lichtblau, Chairman of the Department of Romance Languages at Syracuse University, donated Moore's unpublished manuscript and notes on both Carlos Maria de Bustamante and Jose Maria Heredia on November 14, 1968. Dr. Edwin Cady donated more material related to Jose Maria Heredia on September 25, 1970.
