Biography

Percival Keith Menzies was born in Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada on June 16, 1886. He received an undergraduate degree from Woodstock College, where he captained the rugby team, in 1904. Menzies then moved on to the University of Toronto, where he received a B.A. in Liberal Arts in 1908 and a B.A. in Medicine in 1910. After getting his Ontario medical license in 1910, Menzies made his way to the United States. While working toward his doctorate, Menzies worked in institutions like the Hospital of the New York Society for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled and the Saint Mary's campus of the Mayo Clinic Hospital, where he served as a surgical resident under Dr. William J. Mayo. In 1914, as World War I got underway, Menzies was appointed to the Royal Army Medical Corps, for which he would serve until the end of the war in 1918.

After his military service, Menzies went back to work in New York. In 1920, after obtaining his New York medical license, Menzies became a partner at the Syracuse Clinic. In 1928 he received his doctorate from the University of Toronto and went on to be chief of surgery at Syracuse Memorial Hospital, Syracuse General Hospital, and the then City Hospitals. Menzies also taught at the Syracuse University College of Medicine. Upon his retirement in 1952, after over 40 years in the medical field, the University awarded him the title of professor emeritus.

Menzies did not hang up his coat after his retirement but continued to practice medicine outside of the hospital. He worked as medical director of L.C. Smith & Corona Typewriters Incorporated, plant surgeon of The Prosperity Company, and surgical consultant for the Syracuse Regional Office of the New York State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Menzies was an enthusiastic member of the Freemasons and was also active in various boards and organizations, including the Syracuse Ostomy Club, the American Cancer Society, and the Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity.

Percival K. Menzies died on February 25, 1971 in Syracuse, New York.

Scope and Content Note

The Percival K. Menzies Papers contain materials dating from 1903 to 1965. Included in the collection are his diplomas from Woodstock College and the University of Toronto, medical licenses, certificates from hospitals by which he was employed, and a certificate of his appointment to the Royal Army Medical Corps. The collection also contains documents concerning his time as a Freemason, a personal letter, awards, and photographs. Also included are two certificates awarded to a Margaret McDonald.
