Biography

Howard Wilder Lyman was born in Lancaster, Massachusetts on February 2, 1879. As a young adult, Lyman attended the University of Rochester and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston from which he graduated with honors in 1909. Lyman's career began in Boston area churches, until he moved on to teach at Ohio Wesleyan University. He began teaching at Syracuse University in 1912 in the music department of the College of Fine Arts. As professor of voice and choral music, Lyman founded the Syracuse University Chorus, which he directed until he retired professor emeritus in 1945. As a scholar, Lyman had a specific interest in hymnology. He was a member of Psi Upsilon and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.

Throughout his life, Lyman was very active in church choral productions throughout Syracuse. He was the director of the University Methodist Church choir for 27 years, retiring from that post in 1953, and Minister of Music for the First Baptist Church for 12 years. He also spent many summers at the Chautauqua Institution, serving as Associate Director of Music and teaching hymnology in the School of Religion, among his other specialties.

Howard Wilder Lyman died on February 27, 1980.


Scope and Content Note

The Howard Wilder Lyman Papers are composed of a personal summary and unpublished autobiography written by Lyman, photographs from his time as a University voice and choral music professor, event programs from his time as director of the Syracuse University Chorus, and evidence of his collaboration with McGraw-Hill Encyclopedias.
