Andrew Currie Johnstone (1922-1996) was a Syracuse University alumnus, veteran, and artist.

Johnstone was born on July 30, 1922, and grew up in the Bronx, New York. He attended the New York City School for the Gifted Child and went on to the School of Performing Arts, where he dabbled in dance and other art forms. Johnstone enlisted in the Army in 1942 to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After he was discharged, he become one of a large number of war veterans to receive the benefits of the G.I. Bill. Johnstone became a student at Syracuse University after the war, where he earned both a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in arts education. He graduated magna cum laude in 1950. During his time at Syracuse University, Johnstone was a member of a large number of groups and organizations. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the rowing team, and the Outing Club. He was also a member of Borscht and Potatoes, a writing club that encouraged both academic and experimental work. In his later years, Johnstone received a Fulbright Award and taught in Glasgow, Scotland. He also continued his education at Columbia University.

Johnstone began to foster his interest in the arts at a young age and continued to create throughout his life. He worked within a wide range of media, including pastels, oils, acrylics, collage, and sculpture. Some of his works can be seen in the collections of institutions such as the Everson Museum, Syracuse University, and the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute.

Andrew Johnstone died in Oswego, New York on October 17, 1996.


Scope and Content Note

The Andrew C. Johnstone Portfolio contains works created by the artist, in various media, between 1936 and 1966. The collection is arranged into three series:

Collages/mixed media contains artistic works constructed from multiple materials including canvas strips, magazine clippings, and cardstock.

Drawings contains works created with pen, pencil, charcoals, pastels, crayons, and any combination of those media.

Paintings contains works created with oils, acrylics, tempera, watercolors, and any combination of those media.
