Biography
Daniel F. Jackson was a professor at Syracuse University and a leading expert in the field of limnology, the study of fresh water. Jackson attended the University of Pittsburgh receiving a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in zoology in 1949 and 1950 respectively. He then attended the State University of New York’s College of Forestry and earned a Ph.D. in fisheries and limnology in 1957.
Throughout his time as a student, Jackson worked as a lecturer and assistant professor of biology at the University of Pittsburgh, Western Michigan University, as well as the College of Steubenville. Additionally, from 1952 to 1953 Jackson worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a hydrologist. In 1963, he became a professor of civil engineering at Syracuse University, a role he stayed in until 1973. He then became the director of the Division of Environmental and Urban Systems at Florida International University.
In addition to his work as a professor, Jackson was also on various committees and consulted on regional projects about water pollution. He was an advisor to the United States Public Health Service Project on Lake Ontario as well as the United States Federal Water Pollution Control Administration. While at Syracuse University, Jackson played an important role in initiating the clean-up of Onondaga Lake. For this project he served as chairman of the Onondaga Lake Scientific Council and the New York State’s Health Department Advisory Committee on Algae and Related Problems. Additionally, Jackson is known for the artificial stream he created while at Syracuse University called “Jackson’s Run,” which was integral in his study of the growth of algae and water pollution.
As an expert on water pollution and fresh water, Jackson has been asked to speak at many academic conferences as well as churches, schools, and civic groups. In 1966, he spoke at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Institute about water pollution. He was also invited to lecture at the Polish Academy of Sciences and the 16th International Limnological Congress at Warsaw while teaching at Syracuse University. As a scholar, Jackson authored over 50 scientific publications related to water pollution and treatment and was published in Yale Scientific Magazine. He was also the editor of Algae and Man (Plenum, 1964) and co-authored “Variations in Summer Phytoplankton Populations of Skaneateles Lake, New York,” with Henry F. A. Meier (International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology, 1966).
Over the course of his career, Jackson has held memberships with the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, Ecological Society of America, American Fisheries Society, and the Water Pollution Control Federation. He has also received an honorary membership in the Society for Natural Science and was awarded the Rotary International Award for the Advancement of Science in Kentucky in 1962.
