Biography
Dr. Paul Melvin Halverson taught in the Syracuse University School of Education for fifteen years, imparting his knowledge on curriculum and supervision.
Halverson was born, raised, and educated in the Midwest and spent the first part of his career as a teacher and administrator in that region. The son of the Rev. Melvin W. Halverson and Ruth Peterson Halverson, he was born on July 8, 1912 in Omaha, Nebraska. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa (1933) and his Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (1938). His professional career began in high schools and state colleges, but shortly thereafter Halverson made his way east, attending the Teachers College at Columbia University, where he earned an Education Doctorate in 1952.
The same year, Halverson was hired as an assistant professor at Syracuse University’s School of Education. His academic interest centered on administration, curriculum, and supervision in secondary schools, and he taught such classes as Foundations of Curriculum Development and Supervision of Instruction. During his time at Syracuse University, Halverson established himself as a stalwart proponent of the education program and was held in high esteem by his peers. For the School of Education's 50th anniversary celebrations in 1956, he was given the honor of delivering the annual J. Richard Street Lecture, speaking in favor of increasing the level of independence and freedom allotted for high school students in order to prepare them for adulthood. His interest in administration and curriculum translated well into a variety of other professional undertakings as well, including consulting work and membership in various organizations such as the New York Education Research Association and the National Commission on Secondary Education.
Halverson worked at the School of Education through 1967, at which point he left to take a position at the University of Georgia where he worked to develop a doctoral program in the study of curriculum. He retired in 1977 and remained in Georgia until passing away on September 2, 1998.

The Paul M. Halverson Papers consist of published materials authored by Halverson, including several books and a speech on secondary education, an informational brochure on leading group discussions, and scholarly articles about administration and curriculum development.
