Biography

Isaac James Furman (1879-1933) was a medical physician and alumnus of Syracuse University College of Medicine. Born in Fairport, New York, Furman spent his childhood growing up on a farm and attended Macedon Academy for high school. He then spent nearly three years teaching after he graduated from high school before taking a pre-medical course at Colgate University in 1901. Furman began his medical studies at Syracuse University College of Medicine in 1902 and graduated in 1906. In addition to his studies, he worked as a clinical assistant at Pines Sanitarium in Auburn, New York and interned at the Hospital of The Good Shepherd in Syracuse, New York.

From 1906 to 1912, Furman practiced general medicine at a private practice in Shortsville, New York. In 1912 he began working as an assistant physician for the State Hospital Service. With this hospital service, Forman was able to start a mental health clinic at Harlem Hospital from 1921 to 1923 and was eventually promoted to First Assistant Physician in 1924. Forman was also a Clinical Professor of Psychopathology at Columbia University for three years starting in 1927. In 1931, he was named a member of the New York Psychiatric Society.

Isaac James Furman died on May 5, 1933.
