Historical Note

In October of 1918, the first Evening Session, which became Syracuse University's School of Extension Teaching and Adult Education, was held. Sessions were offered to adults to provide them with information in subjects without necessarily requiring them to take college credit or pass examinations. Originally opened to civil service employees, these sessions were quickly opened to all adults to allow working people the opportunity to further educate themselves. Extension centers around New York State gave adults who lived far from the University a chance to increase their knowledge in various subjects. Centers included Rome, Utica, and the largest, Endicott (Triple Cities College). Opened in 1933, Triple Cities College eventually became a two-year branch of the University and finally awarded four-year degrees in 1953. In 1946, the School of Extension Teaching was reformed into what is now University College. After that time, Extension Teaching and Adult Education referred to the satellite centers that provided adult education. Extension centers, once offering more options to distance students, was later replaced by online learning.

Scope and Content Note

The Syracuse University Extension Teaching and Adult Education Records contain publications, correspondence and material related to the off-site centers of University College spanning from 1925 to 1989, with the majority of material ranging from the 1950s to 1970s. This collection is separated into two series: Centers and Director Files.

The Centers series contains publications and correspondence related to the different satellite centers of the Extension Teaching and Adult Education program.

The Director Files series contains mostly correspondence from the office of the director. Files from 1930 until 1941 are of D. Walter Morton, who was director until he died in 1941. After his death, A. Blair Knapp served for two years as acting director until the appointment of Kenneth Bartlett, who served from 1943 until 1946.
