Biography

Donald A. Dike (1920-1978) was an American essayist and professor of English at Syracuse University. Dike was born in New York City. He received his B.A. at Columbia University in 1941 before going on to get an M.A. from Columbia University in 1942. After receiving his degrees he served in the 104 Infantry Division and served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

Dike joined the faculty of Syracuse University in 1946 and he was awarded his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1954. He taught 19th and 20th century literature, literary criticism, and writing. He directed both the undergraduate and the graduate creative writing program. He coedited Selected Essays of Delmore Schwartz and edited Syracuse Poems 1971. Dike also widely published essays and academic articles throughout his career.


Scope and Content Note

The Donald A. Dike Papers span from 1961 to 1970. The papers include a draft of his essay “The Difficult Innocence: Blake’s Songs and Pastoral” and an annotated draft, introduction and bibliography for the book Selected Essays of Delmore Schwartz.
