Biography
Irwin Deutscher (b.1923) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He began attending the University of Missouri in 1941 with hopes of getting a degree in philosophy. Deutscher's education was temporarily put on the back burner, however, when he joined the war efforts as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. After his four years with the Marine Corps, he returned to the University of Missouri and completed his A.B. in philosophy in 1949. Deutscher earned all of his graduate degrees from the University of Missouri and, by 1959, he had received an M.S. in statistics (1953), an M.A. in sociology (1953), and a Ph.D. in sociology (1959). After graduating with his second master's, he served as the Director of Research in Health and Welfare for Community Studies, Incorporated in Kansas City. Deutscher moved to Syracuse, after completing his Ph.D., to take up a position at the newly-developed Syracuse University Youth Development Center. In 1960, he became the Director of Research for the center and, in 1962, he was named director of the whole operation, a position he held until 1965.
In addition to his duties at the Youth Development Center, Deutscher was a professor of sociology at Syracuse University and was promoted to the position of full professor in 1964. He was very active in the academic community and served on a number of boards, including the Delinquency Grants Review Committee of the National Institute of Mental Health, the Syracuse University Council of Deans, the Joint Student Government's Anti-Discriminatory Clause Board, and the American Sociological Society. Deutscher was also active in the communities outside around Syracuse. He was the associate director of Crusade for Opportunity, a member of the County Youth Board, and he joined and supported his wife Verda's involvement with the Syracuse Urban League, the Syracuse NAACP, and Syracuse Planned Parenthood. An avid supporter of CORE (the Congress of Racial Equality), Deutscher joined his students, on more than one occasion, in their protestation of discrimination.
After resigning from the director position at the Youth Development Center in 1965, Deutscher took a yearlong sabbatical from the University in order to work at the University of California, Berkeley. He returned to New York for a couple of years before leaving Syracuse University in 1968 in order to take a position at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Irwin Deutscher Papers contain biographical information, correspondence in the forms of letters, memos, and notes, and individual papers, proposals, and research reports. The collection also contains research, papers, and some published works pertaining to the Syracuse University Youth Development Center and the Syracuse Action for Youth program.

The Irwin Deutscher Papers were gifted to the Syracuse University Archives by Dr. Irwin Deutscher in 1968, and additional materials were pulled from the Archives' Youth Development Center Collection and placed in this collection.
