Biography

Donald Gerst Bishop was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on May 16, 1907. Bishop received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Akron in 1928 and a Master of Arts from Princeton University in 1929. He married Iona Fay Maxwell in 1937. From 1932 to 1935, he taught in the Akron Public School System, before receiving a Ph.D. from Ohio State in 1939. He was a professor of political science in Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs from 1938 to 1972 and chaired the department from 1965 to1966. He also served as chairman of the International Relations Concentration at Syracuse University.

Bishop traveled extensively while a faculty member at Syracuse University. In the summer of 1946, Bishop took thirty public school teachers to Switzerland to study the history and customs of the country and tour factories, model farms, prisons, and historic sites. In 1950, he visited eight Latin American countries to start a lecture series on comparative government for American teachers on behalf of the Institute of World Studies. From 1960 to 1961, Bishop served as the chairman of the New York State Political Science Association. He published several books, including The Roosevelt - Litvinov Agreements (1965), which described the pre-World War II relationship between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Soviet Foreign Minister Maxim Litvinov.

From 1964 to 1965, Bishop traveled to Washington, D.C. and New York City as part of the International Organization Research Program, where he studied relations between the American government and the United Nations. He also served as faculty sponsor of the UN Association at Syracuse University. From 1966 to 1967, Bishop was a Visiting Professor of International Affairs at Tunghai University in Taiwan, sponsored by the United Board for Christian Higher Education. His wife Iona taught English to freshman students at the university. Bishop wrote an article called “Reflections from the Rice Paddies” detailing his experiences. He retired from Syracuse University in 1972 and died in 1987.

Scope and Content Note

The Donald G. Bishop Papers contain materials dating from 1939 to 1970, from his time as a faculty member of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. The Papers are divided into three series, Correspondence, Manuscripts and Published Materials, and Syracuse University.

The Correspondence series contains letters related to personal matters and Bishop's work at Syracuse University and abroad.

The Manuscripts and Published Materials series includes drafts and published versions of works written by Donald G. Bishop, including The Roosevelt - Litvinov Agreements and The Administration of British Foreign Relations. Also included is a draft of "Reflections from the Rice Paddies," a collection of anecdotes from his time as a visiting professor at Tunghai University in Taiwan

The Syracuse University series includes materials from the International Relations Concentration, Syracuse-in-Asia program, and assignments and examinations. The series also includes photographs of students at a seminar in Washington, D.C.
