Eri Starks Beebe (1877-1951) was a Methodist minister who graduated from Syracuse University in 1905. Beebe was born on December 8, 1877 in Columbia Co., New York, grew up in Canaan Four Corners, and went to Chatham High School. He attended Albany Business College during the years of 1897 and 1898 and later entered Syracuse University in 1901. Before his graduation in 1905, Beebe was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He married Ruth Penelope Roberts on September 7, 1910.

Before Beebe was involved in ministry, he held several other jobs. He taught private school in Massachusetts and was the principal of Palatine Bridge High School between 1908 and 1910. Beebe also did some work in the real estate and lumber field.

Beebe's ministry started in 1920, and he worked as a Methodist minister throughout the state of New York until 1945. He also served as supply pastor at Fernwood between 1945 and 1950. During the years of 1941 and 1945, Beebe served as chairman of the ministerial training board. He was ordained through the Northern New York Conference of the Methodist Church. Beebe died on December 6, 1951.

Ruth Roberts Beebe attended Syracuse University and graduated in 1908. While there, she was a part of the Math Club. In 1915, she became a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, the honorary math society that was founded at Syracuse University the year prior.


Scope and Content Note

The Eri Starks Beebe and Ruth Roberts Beebe Papers contains materials on Eri Starks Beebe and Ruth Roberts Beebe dating between 1905 and 1924. Among Eri's papers are a petition from members of the class of 1905 about their class gift, letters of recommendation on his behalf for a position of leadership at a school, a professional certificate from Syracuse University, a copy of his transcript, a preacher's license, a letter granting him exemption from a Syracuse University class, and three certificates of his professional career with the Methodist Church. Ruth's papers include an essay for the Math Club entitled "The History of Magic Squares," her professional certificate from Syracuse University, and her Pi Mu Epsilon certificate and letter.

The collection also include Ruth Roberts's and Eri Beebe's diplomas. Found with Eri's diploma was a note describing the slightly darkened condition of his diploma: "In 1905 there was a fire in the Registrar's office, the night before Commencement. Many diplomas were damaged by smoke, as was this one."
