Biographical History

The Steam Locomotive Research Institute was incorporated May 2, 1945, in Delaware, to perform scientific research on the development and improvement of the steam locomotive. It neither manufactured nor sold a product. The Board of Directors was composed of administrators drawn from several locomotive manufacturers, among them the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York and the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Institute attempted to establish itself as a non-profit organization in New York State in late 1945, finally succeeding in December of that year. By 1952, however, it became clear that the steam locomotive would be replaced by diesel and/or gas turbine engines. The Institute voted to dissolve itself, doing so formally in September 1952. The remaining funds, some $40,000, were given to the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, for the endowment of a scholarship fund for the sons of railroad men.
