Biographical History

World War II (1939-1945) was the second global conflict of the 20th century. It is generally considered to have begun in September of 1939 with Germany's invasion of Poland and the primary motivation behind it was Germany's determination to expand across Europe. On one side were the Allies (at first France, Poland, Britain and her Commonwealth, Australia, New Zealand and Canada; later joined by the United States, Russia and China) and on the other the Axis (primarily Germany, Italy and Japan). The war ended in Europe on 8 May 1945 (V-E Day) and in Asia three months later, on 15 August 1945 (V-J Day), shortly after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
