Biographical History

The town of Chittenango is in Madison County in central New York state. The town was for many years a thriving commercial town; businesses included a gristmill, sawmills, tanneries, shoe manufactories, a large woolen mill, foundries, cotton mill, paper mill, asheries, lime kilns, numerous stores, hotels, and churches, and the Yates Polytechnic Institute. The cotton factory flourished in the 1860's and 1870's.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Chittenango Cotton Company Ledger is a single volume of 615 pages, handwritten, which appears to be a listing of monies paid during the years 1871-1873. Although acquired as a volume of the Chittenango Cotton Company, and each page is headed with the word "Chittenango," there is no information in the volume itself to definitively support or refute the name. There are many references to a distillery and a foundry, and products mentioned include, in addition to the expected cloth and cotton, grains, wine, barrels, and cattle. The banks of Chittenango and Canastota figure prominently in the record. There is no index to the businesses and individuals whose names appear in the volume.

Although additional research would be required to define the volume accurately, the information is considered useful to those doing research on the history of Madison County.
