Biographical History

Brookfield is located in the southeast part of Madison County, New York. The area was first settled in 1791 by Stephen Hoxie and Phineas Brown, who were soon followed by others. The first town meeting was held in 1795. The town of Brookfield, which originally included Nos. 17, 18, and 19 of the Chenango Twenty Townships, was split off from Paris in 1795 and the first town meeting held shortly thereafter. [John E. Smith, ed. History of Brookfield, NY from our county and its people: A descriptive and biographical record of Madison County, New York. Boston: Boston History Company, 1899.]
